The Easy Way to Design Logos using AI and DALL-E-2
A simple step-by-step guide to designing a sleek logo leveraging generative AI. No prior design experience required.
If you are a backend developer like me or are a beginner in design, this guide is for you. Here we will see how you can quickly create and prototype logo designs for your organization(or even personal brand) in just under 30 minutes.
Generating the Image
Create an account and log in to OpenAI's DALL-E. Write a textual prompt to start generating images.
Let's say you want to create a logo for a blockchain company, and you want it to be black or in similar dark shades. Then, you can have a prompt like:
A 2d, symmetrical, flat logo for a blockchain company that is sleek and simple. It should be of black shade and should be subtle.
The text prompt doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be descriptive, and the AI will do the rest of the magic. ✨✨
Also, you can select your preferred image and generate variations from the already generated images.
The third one looks good in this example, so let's go with that. First, we can crop it to remove the text part of it.
Vectorizing the Image to a Logo
Why do we need to vectorize an image and why is it important?
The image we get from DALL-E is a raster image, which contains the pixel data of each of the points of an image. So, if you zoom in on a raster image, it will pixelate. A vector image on the other hand consists of mathematical equations and can be zoomed in/out with no pixelation. Vector images are generally preferred for storing icons, symbols, and logos.
To do this, you can head to https://vectorizer.com/ to vectorize the image.
Note: You can consider using Adobe Illustrator but that is a more complex option and requires some prior familiarity with the software.
Personalize the Logo
As a final step, you can personalize the logo for your brand. Fire up Canva and add some text to the logo. In this example, let's name it Blockhash. Canva allows you to experiment with different Fonts and spacing options. It has a very gentle learning curve but is still a very powerful editor to quickly prototype and create designs.
So, let's have a look at the final logo:
So in conclusion, DALL-E-2 can help you design & prototype logos and graphics quickly. It's similar to how Firebase allows front-end devs to spin up a backend quickly, AI design tools help backend devs to create designs quickly.
Fun fact: The cover for this article was also designed with the help of DALL-E-2!
